Our GenCyber camp will train secondary school teachers in the principles of good cybersecurity practices and the science behind those practices so that they may both teach their students effective practices as well as motivate these students to study more cybersecurity in more detail as they move into their chosen disciplines in colleges and universities.

This camp is for teachers who know a little about computer security but know they have gaps in their knowledge.  You should apply if you are a STEM or non-STEM teacher who wants to learn and teach your students about safe practices and the principles of computer security.

The application process will close on April 25, 2018 and teachers will be notified the week of April 30, 2018.

After completing the training camp, participants will be able to:
  • Explain and implement improved cybersecurity practices for self-protection
  • Describe the basics of technology and science behind the use of cybersecurity mechanisms
  • Access the resources available to extend their and their students' knowledge of advanced principles and practices in cybersecurity
  • Network with others in similar teaching roles who endeavor to expand their cybersecurity teaching resources
  • Articulate the various opportunities for careers in cybersecurity
  • Access secondary school lesson plans for teaching cybersecurity principles

Participants will receive housing, meals, a transportation allowance and a participation honorarium.

  • Housing will be in the air-conditioned dorms at Virginia Tech. Each participant will have a private room within a suite.
  • Most meals will be provided in the Virginia Tech D2 dining hall
  • Participants will receive up to $275 for their travel mileage to and from the Virginia Tech campus in Blacksburg, Virginia.
  • Participants who complete the course and fulfill requirements will receive a $400 honorarium.
  • Participants who complete the course will receive 3.5 CEUs.
