Looking forward to another great year of FCCLA!
I am excited to announce that this is the 2nd year that Van Meter has a FCCLA (Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America) student organization. FCCLA was formerly known as FHA (Future Homemakers of America). FHA changed their organization name to FCCLA in 1999 after Home Economics changed its name to Family and Consumer Sciences officially in 1994.
FCCLA is a nonprofit student organization for young men and women in grades 9-12 who take family and consumer sciences courses and/or are interested in learning more about the various areas within family and consumer sciences. Currently, students do NOT need to be enrolled in a family and consumer sciences class to be an active FCCLA member.
At Van Meter, our focus is upon community service activities, leadership, decision making skills, and character development. Throughout the year, we will be participating in community service activities in Van Meter and around the Des Moines area. We will also be participating in fundraising activities so our students can attend a variety of meetings and conferences. District meeting is held in Ankeny in November and State Conference is held in Des Moines in March.
Students can also participate in STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) events in the fact that they take a topic that they have learned in family and consumer sciences, and create a project to present and compete in. They are a variety of categories for students to choose from. STAR events are first judged at the District level in January/February. If students make it to State, they will then compete again. The highest gold in each category at State makes it to Nationals. Nationals rotates through many different US cities each summer, and is an opportunity of a lifetime.
I am very excited that Van Meter has a FCCLA chapter!
Just another example of the many wonderful opportunities and activities we have available for our students!
Congratulations 2012 District FCCLA STAR Participants!
I'm pleased to announce that all 17 FCCLA students who competed today at Districts will perform at the State FCCLA Leadership Conference at the end of March.
The top three in each category advance to State!
We received 5 gold medals and 6 silver medals! 3 of those silver medals were 1 to 2 points away from gold!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

FAMILY AND CONSUMER SCIENCES TEACHER ACCEPTS
NATIONAL LEADERSHIP ROLE
Anaheim, CA. – Jennifer Callahan, a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher at Van Meter High School in Van Meter, was selected by the Iowa association of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) to join the nationally sponsored Adviser-to-Adviser program. As an Adviser-to-Adviser leader, Jennifer participated in a special training session at the FCCLA 2011 National Leadership Conference held July 10-14 in Anaheim, CA. More than 6,300 members, advisers, alumni, and guests attended the meeting.
As a part of this national adviser network, Jennifer plans to assist Mary Ann Adams, the Iowa state adviser, with adviser training and organizational promotion throughout the upcoming year. As a spokesperson for the organization, Jennifer plans to represent FCCLA at the IFCSEP (Iowa Family and Consumer Sciences Educators for Progress) Conference, and several different FCCLA trainings, workshops, and the State Conference.
One of Jennifer’s responsibilities in this leadership role is to mentor new and potential advisers and show how FCCLA chapters add a new dimension to the Family and Consumer Sciences curriculum by providing students with leadership skills.
“I am looking forward to connecting with new and current FCS teachers and helping them start or re-start a FCCLA chapter. FCCLA has been a big part of my life since I was a freshman in high school. I want to make sure kids all across the State have the same opportunities and experiences that I had that led me to my career as a Family and Consumer Sciences teacher.”
Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA), is a dynamic and effective national student organization that helps young men and women become leaders and address important personal, family, work, and societal issues through Family and Consumer Sciences education. FCCLA has over 190,000 members and over 6,500 chapters from 50 state associations, Puerto Rico, and the Virgin Islands. The organization has involved more than ten million youth since its founding in 1945.
FCCLA: The Ultimate Leadership Experience is unique among youth organizations because its programs are planned and run by members. It is the only career and technical in-school student organization with the family as its central focus. Participation in national programs and chapter activities helps members become strong leaders in their families, careers, and communities. When utilizing national programs, 65% of FCCLA advisers report teaching community service and 74% report teaching career preparation.
