Country Project Information

                                                                                 SCHOOL RESPONSIBILITIES

Your child has chosen a country to research. He/she will be responsible for researching this country, and all of the research will be completed in class. We will be using internet resources and books to help us locate the information needed. If your child is absent, he or she may be asked to locate the information at home or during recess. Mrs. Miller is collaborating with us and will help the students practice writing bibliographies to document their resources. Once all of the information is gathered, we will guide your child and help him/her develop Web 2.0 projects highlighting important facts about this country.

                                                                                    HOME RESPONSIBILITIES

To enhance this project, we host a 'Country Potluck' at the end of the year. Students will be encouraged to bring in a food dish native to that country. I have a few recipe books that your child can look through, or you may decide to visit the internet. There is an AEA website called Culture Grams that includes recipes. Your child will also be using this site to research their country information. When you bring your food item to the potluck, please label the food dish with the name of the dish and the country it represents. We want to gather all the recipes ahead of time so that each child will have a recipe book to take with them at the end of the year. VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY: We are looking for a wonderful person to help put our book together. If you are interested, let Mrs. Volk know!

The potluck is scheduled for Wednesday, May 15th from 5:30-6:30 pm in the school cafeteria. In the past, we have tasted some very delicious food from various countries so I hope that everyone is able to attend! Having said that, attendance at the potluck is not required. I know that schedules tend to get very busy at the end of the year, so please know that your child's grade in social studies is not dependent upon your attendance at the potluck.

Your child is encouraged to find a clothing item or outfit that represents this country to wear during our 'Parade of Countries'. While the clothing item is not required, it is strongly encouraged because students will be parading through other classrooms, as well as introducing themselves and telling what country they researched. They are also encouraged to wear their clothing item or outfit to the potluck. In the past, some students have commented that they do feel a bit foolish without the clothing item, but it is not required. I encourage you to be creative and use items already at home, such as a robe for a kimono or a redesigned hat. Borrowing items from family and friends is also a good idea. This is not meant to cost money. Please start now and hopefully by the beginning of May an idea will have presented itself. Again, be creative!

                                                                                  VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY

I am looking for a kind and giving person to help organize our recipe book. Your responsibilities would include: organizing the recipes, retyping of the recipe if it isn't emailed and/or in recipe format, adding a titled front cover, and binding the recipes into a book-type format   You will have lots of creative opportunities to design this book as you see fit. The book would need to be completed by May 17th so that copies can be distributed to the students. We would need approximately 45 copies of the book. If you are interested in helping with this project, please let me know ASAP.

Please feel free to contact me with question regarding the country project. I can be reached via email at or by phone 996-2221 ext. 116.
