Hello and welcome my monthly blog page.  It is the goal of this page to reach out to students, staff, parents and the community. On a monthly basis I will attempt to, in abbreviated fashion, list upcoming events and discuss current  educational topics of interest.  If you have specific questions please feel free to contact me in by calling the elementary office.  Given that I am a part-time interim superintendent I am only in the office two days a week on average.  That does not mean your concerns are not important; it is preferable that you call ahead and make an appointment to visit with me.  Working together to a common end we can solve almost any concern.

Just a bit about me.  I am a graduate of Millikin University (BA, Biology), Western Illinois University (MS, Microbiology), Teaching and administrative Certificates from the University of Illinois-Springfield, and Superintendent Endorsement from Illinois State University.  I recently retired from full time after 35 years of service, serving in Decatur, Warrensburg-Latham, Spoon River Valley, and now VIT.  I have served  previously in the capacity of science teacher, Dean of Students, Assistant Principal, Principal, and Superintendent.

This month is a very busy one.  At the beginning of the month on Thursday, November 9th @ 2:15 PM in the High School Gym our annual Veteran’s Day Celebration will take place.  Whether or not you can attend, please remember to thank a veteran for their service when you see them.  Throughout the course of the year, please make every effort as parents and community members  to attend as many school events as possible.  A list of November events includes:

November 8th @ 7 PM:  South Fulton Sports Coop Fall Meeting in Astoria

November 10th:  Veterans Day, No Classes in session.

November 14-18:  Fulton County Girls Basketball Tourney in Farmington

November 15th @ 7 PM:  Board of Education Meeting in VIT High School Library.

November 20-25:  Fulton County Boys Basketball Tourney  (TBA)

November 22-24:  Thanksgiving Break; No Classes in session.

November 27th: Classes Resume.

Earlier this fall, the Illinois General assembly approved the Evidenced Based Funding Model (EBM). It consists of four basic components and will require a large learning curve to understand it fully.  The plan should be an important step in providing adequate funding for all kids across Illinois.  It requires that we fully document our district needs and involves increased district reporting.  The state of Illinois also had its new Federal ESSA plan approved which will have increased instructional requirements, but also strive to provide a safe and productive learning environment for students.  Our staff will redouble their efforts to foster an improved instructional climate.

Winter weather is always a concern for VIT.  We have developed a plan to contact our local road personnel who will inform me about local roads.  If a determination is made to close school I will inform non-certified staff,  Mr. Klaska and Ms. Korsmeyer using the remind text system  After they receive my message, they will send a second remind and blackboard message to staff, students and parents informing them of the closure.  The entire process will start around 5 AM and conclude around 6 AM.  After 6 AM I will place additional announcements through traditional broadcast media. If your student is involved in practices that determination may be made later in the day, depending up weather conditions.  Student and staff safety is of utmost concern to myself and the district.  If you have any questions please feel free to contact any building administrator.

Finally,  I wanted to take a moment to thank everyone for making me feel welcome in the district.  If you haven’t met me, please free to stop by the elementary unit office and say hello.

On behalf of my family and myself I want to wish everyone a healthy, safe, and prosperous Thanksgiving season.

Most Sincerely,

Mr. Reynolds

K. Scot Reynolds
