Bringing up our Children in the Nurture and Admonition of the Lord

Builders of Lives

By Susan Queen

The neatly stacked cardboard boxes seemed safely stored in the corner of the basement.  In reality, an unseen trickle of water seeping from a cracked cinder block was causing rot and mildew damage to the bottom side of the boxes and their content.  When the problem was finally discovered, all was ruined and had to be discarded.  The house was designed during World War II by a woman with limited knowledge and funds.  Though she did the best she knew how, her best did not hold up through the test of time.

How are we building the lives God has entrusted to us?   We do the best we know how, not realizing how limited our knowledge and resources really are.  Then as time passes, due to faulty building material, there is undetected seepage, rotting out the very lives we have so carefully built.  Psalm 127:1a says, “Except the Lord build the house they labor in vain that build it.”

God is the architect, we are the laborers.  He lists and provides the highest quality building materials, and it is our duty to use them.  Many times, because of our ignorance, we use second rate supplies.  For a while it all looks good, but as time goes on, we notice things are not working as smoothly as they once did.  As more time passes, our seemingly wonderful homes fall apart around us.   We can only ask, “How did this happen?”

Unless there is a conscious effort to seek out the ways of the Lord, we automatically pick up Satan’s deceitful materials and build with them.  Why would any one of us not seek God’s plan and supplies?  One possible reason could be we do not truly have confidence in God’s ways.   Hosea 14:9 tells us the ways of the LORD are right, and in Isaiah 45:19, the Lord tells us, “…I the Lord speak righteousness; I declare things that are right.”   God’s ways should be sought out first and foremost.

Another possible reason could be we do not truly fear the Lord.  The fear of the Lord is the beginning of wisdom.  A healthy fear of the Lord causes us to seek his ways and make the changes in our lives according to His Word.  (Psalm 55:19- Because they have no changes, therefore they fear not God.)  When God sees us making changes in our lifestyle in order to obey HIS ways then God knows we truly fear Him.  When he sees our heart of obedience he gives more wisdom, in other words, he gives more building supplies.  Just as a builder would carefully read and study the plan of a master architect and do exactly as written out, so we must be diligent to study and follow God’s master plan. Always remember it takes faith to obey—and without faith it is impossible to please God.  If we are pleasing our Heavenly Father by subjecting ourselves to his will, not only does he give more wisdom, but he is also open eared to our prayer.  Answered prayer is essential in raising Godly children.  But obedience to God’s Word is the key to answered prayer.  “If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatsoever ye will, and it shall be done unto you.” (John 25:7)  Another sobering verse is found in Hoses 3:6, where God is speaking to his people, “…Seeing thou has forgotten the law of thy God, I will also forget thy children.” If we want God to work in the hearts of our children it is imperative that we allow God to work in our hearts.

We are builders.  Builders of the precious lives God has placed in our care.   The reason for all our labor is to build lives that are able to stand on their own with HEARTS THAT DESIRE TO DO RIGHT.  Unless a child knows God, and WANTS to obey him, all our careful training is in vain.  Each one of us needs to ask ourselves:  How am I building?  Do I have confidence in God’s building materials, or am I mixing faulty supplies with His.  Then, am I making the changes in my heart and life the Lord asks of me?  Remember, God’s building supplies are of the highest quality and will stand through eons of time.   Why use anything else?
