French lentils

Below are recipes using mung beans aka mung / moong dal as its main ingredient. If you like mung beans, you'll probably love these easy dishes.

Here's one of many places where you can buy mung beans. Get the split, hulled ones (no skin). 

Here's a short video showing you how to cook your mung beans. After that, all you'll need to do is fry up some seasonings and veggies and add the mung beans to this fried mixture. .


French Lentil stew

1 cup dried French lentils                                         

½ cup dried garbanzos beans 
1 large onion
1 cup canned tomato crushed, diced, or sauce
5 small potatoes
curry powder or some spice you like
red chili
oil

Cook lentils for 20 minutes in a pressure cooker (or use some other cooking method) in plain tap water without any other ingredients until completely done. Set aside. (See cooking demos on how to use pressure cooker, stove top cooking, and/or slow cooker.)


In a frying pan with 3 tb oil, fry one large onion into largely diced onions (red onions would be great – but any onions will do) until a little bit soft. Add a red chili for pizzazz if you like. Set aside when done.                       
 

In this frying pan, fry 2 tb of some curry powder (see notes on how to choose a curry powder) or other spices that you already know and like, lightly in order to disseminate the spices and to give them a cooked taste. Now add 1 cup canned tomatoe sauce, crushed tomatoes, or diced tomatoes. (Make sure your canned tomatoes don’t have other spices in them that will conflict with a taste you like.) Simmer for a few minutes. Add lentils slowly in order to make sure the ratio of lentils to onions / tomato mixture is what you like. (Freeze leftover cooked lentils.) Add salt to taste now. Simmer.

In larger frying pan with 5 tb oil, fry 3 medium sized potatoes (red bliss potatoes will be great, but any other potatoes will do) small diced potatoes until golden brown. Add salt to frying pan as soon as you put the potatoes into the pan. Set aside.

Cook rice (white basmati would be great, but any rice with do), 1 cup of rice. Set aside. (See page on how to cook rice if you’re not sure how.)
