Plant milk: Oats

Oat milk is the quickest plant milk to make from scratch. (And they are all pretty easy to make.)

How to make oat milk from scratch

Tools needed: Blender and a strainer.

This recipe makes 5 cups of oat milk and costs about $2.50 or about $0.50 per cup.

Ingredients to make oat milk
1 cup old-fashioned oats
6 cups tap water
1/4 cup white sugar (to taste). You can substitute raisins, plums, or dates for white sugar, if you like.
Pinch of salt (to taste)

Optional: 1 teaspoon vanilla extract or some other flavoring and raisins, prunes, dates as a substitute for white sugar

Soak 1 cup oats in 3 cups tap water for about 15 minutes or more.
Blend the soaked oats in the water for about two minutes on high speed after adding the sugar, vanilla, salt (as you like).
Hold the lid all the while.

Strain the oat milk into a large container.
Add remaining water to the blended mixture as you pour some of the blended mixture into the sieve.
Check for taste.  Add more water, salt, sugar if you need it.
Strain a second time if you feel it's too thick.
Pour into jar or other container.
Start drinking it right away.
Refrigerate remaining milk.

Unlike soy and almond milk, you won't heat this milk. If you do, it'll become a thick milk.
