This is the Counting House which was the office and administration building of the fort. This is where the clerks lived and did the bookkeeping such as taking inventory and counting the furs. This is actually a recreation of the second Counting House. The first location was on the other side of the fort on the south side. When the first building was starting to fall apart and decay they started construction on a new Counting House. In 1844, when it was nearly complete the clerks were very excited for a new not so smelly home, but then Captain Thomas Baillie showed up in need of somewhere to stay. The Hudson's Bay Company allowed him to stay at the Counting House, which left the clerks very disappointed. The clerks were later allowed to move in when he left.
