About VanderCook College of Music

VanderCook College of Music is the only degree-granting institution in the United States solely dedicated to music teacher education. The mission of the college is to enrich the lives of present and future generations through the preparation of teachers in instrumental, choral, and general music disciplines. Its broad-based curriculum is designed to prepare teachers with strong character, skill in the process of teaching, and respect for the essential role of music in our culture.

Teaching Philosophy/Values

1.) As a Music Educator, my students will leave my classroom with the ability to comprehend a majority of the aspects of music. They will be able to pick up a piece of music and figure out how to play it accurately with little to no outside help. The will have the ability to read and comprehend a piece of music the same way that they would read and comprehend a piece of literature.

2.) Students must sing and play in a group setting. This will build teamwork and help them understand how to function as a unit. This type of social-emotional learning is pertinent in the growing mind.

3.) Because we as musicians must perform regularly, it is important that we have confidence. Once a student gains confidence in a band setting, it will permeate throughout all aspects of their life.

4.) Students must understand acceptable contingencies regarding to behavior. 'When you do good things, good things happen to you; and when you do bad things, bad things happen to you.'

5.) With the advancement of technology, all sorts of data is available to our students. It is literally at their fingertips (smartphones, ipads, laptops, etc.) This abundance of information may prove very useful at times, but it can also be a load of (insert expletive). Students must learn to discriminate between valid and invalid data.

Not only was Tayiib an active member of his high school band and various other musical groups, but he also played starting linebacker on his high school varsity football team during his junior and senior years. (Which had winning seasons both years.)

During his college years Tayiib Dauda began expanding his musical prowess in multiple instruments especially the piano and oboe. He continued his run of playing for significant political figures when he played for Mayor of Chicago, Richard M.
