Mentor Program

Participation in the GPA Mentor Program is available for any dues paying member of GPAA. The GPAA mentor program pairs new Graduate Program Advisors (GPAs) with an experienced advisor to provide mentorship through the transition period.  Mentees can expect their mentor to check in with them at least quarterly for the first three quarters after the pairing is established.

When you become a member or renew your membership, you will be asked if you would like to participate in the mentorship program that year, either as a mentor or mentee.  If you volunteer to be a mentor, we may contact you at any point during the current membership year with a potential pairing.

Have you already paid your membership does for the July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017 membership year, but are now interested in becoming a mentor or being a mentee?  Simply email the GPAA Board at to indicate your interest in joining the Mentor Program. Be sure to specify whether you are seeking to be a mentor or a mentee.

If you have not yet started (or renewed) your GPAA membership for the July 1, 2016 - June 30, 2017 membership year, simply indicate your desire to join the Mentor Program when you complete your membership registration.

Graduate advisors are unique as we are usually the only person in our department that works directly with graduate student concerns.  We have all been there, and know this can create difficulties transitioning to your amazing new position.  Your mentor is here to help!  From your mentor, you can expect regular check-ins with you and reasonable availability to answer your questions and concerns.

A formal mentor pairing lasts one academic year (9 months), but can begin at any point during your first year in a new role that works with graduate students.

By volunteering to be a mentor, you will have the opportunity to help guide a new colleague through their transition to everything associated with advising – from student issues to navigating MyGrad Program.

As a mentor, you would be expected to:

  • Check-in with your mentee at least once per month for the first quarter of the pairing
  • Meet in-person with your mentee at least once within the first quarter of pairing
  • Provide a follow-up check in with your mentee at least once for the second and third quarters of the pairing
  • Be available to respond to mentee questions and concerns throughout the period of the pairing

The formal mentorship program lasts one academic year (9 months).  Helpful resources for mentors will be provided upon the initiation of a pairing.

Mentors will be recognized for their contributions on the GPAA website and at the End of the Year Social.
