Beyond Books

2023 | Poster & Postcard | Library of Birmingham

CREATIVE CONCEPT

Embarking on a journey within the Library of Birmingham, our artistic exploration was ignited by a simple question: What stories unfold within these shelves and walls?

Beyond its renowned stature as the largest public library in the UK, the Library of Birmingham offers different experiences beyond the printed page. Traversing from the entrance on ground floor to the pinnacle, walking through different areas including the Secret Rooftop Garden and the Shakespeare Memorial Room, we come across diverse subjects of wonder and curiosity. Nine in total, each scene captures a moment of intrigue that permeate this cultural hub — whether it's the delicate watercolour sketch of a baby cat and its mother gracing a book cover, a lone flower nestled among the foliage of the outdoor terrace, or the sight of an awkward seagull perched upon a pole outside a study area window.

Inspired by the Library's vibrant exterior, the colour palette echoes the hues of its architectural design. Through vibrant strokes and intricate details, the drawing features a sentence at the bottom, “there are other curious things to search for ”, inviting viewers to embrace the spirit of curiosity, to seek out the extraordinary in the ordinary, and to revel in the enchantment of the everyday, finding beauty in the overlooked. In this project, the Library of Birmingham stands as a sanctuary of exploration and enlightenment. The illustration artwork hopes to serve as a reminder to always keep our eyes open, for within the pages of life, countless adventures await.
