Welcome to the TPA 5-8 Middle School Program!

Meet the Staff!

Jeremy Beach - Lead Teacher, Science, 6/7 Literacy

I am originally from Winfield, KS. I graduated from Emporia State University in 2009 with a Bachelors in physics where I then went on to teach freshmen Earth-Space science for one year at Bonner Springs High School and then physics and biology for two years at Gardner-Edgerton High School. I completed a second bachelors in geology from the University of Missouri in 2013  and a Masters of Science in Educational Leadership from Emporia State University in 2014. I have a long line of teachers in my blood, being the 5th generation of my family to teach in Kansas. My great- great grandfather taught in a one-room schoolhouse in the 1880s and the tradition was carried down to my great grandfather, grandmother, father and mother, and then to me. Through it all, I have learned the positive impact that teachers can have on the success of every student they get the privilege to know. In my spare time I love Kansas Jayhawk basketball, Kansas City Chiefs football and playing, recording and listening to music. I play the guitar, bass, drums and keyboards, and often incorporate music into my daily lessons.

Shawn Wilson - Global Studies, 7/8 Literacy

I am originally from Ft. Worth, TX and earned a B.S. in Social Studies Education from the University of Oklahoma.  My first three years teaching saw me teaching OK History, US History, and Government at Bishop McGuinness Catholic High School in OKC.  While there I met and fell in love with my wife of 7+ years now, Brooke.  After the birth of our son, Liam, we moved to her hometown of Americus, KS.  Before coming to TPA, I taught high school social studies at Northern Heights High School, as well as serving as the head baseball and JV basketball coach.  This is currently my 4th year teaching 5-8 Global Studies here at TPA.  I am also the head baseball coach at Emporia High School.  My son is also in the K-4 program here at TPA.  In my spare time I enjoy hanging out with my family in our place out in the country, and cheering on the Texas Rangers in baseball and OU Sooners football.  I am also an admitted news junkie.

Ashley Conrade - Math, 5/6 Literacy

Hello! I grew up in Emporia and graduated from Emporia High School.  In the spring of 2010, I graduated from Emporia State University with a B.S. in Education.  I am certified to teach K-6, K-12 ESL, and 6-12 mathematics.  This past summer I graduated with my Master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction from Kansas State University. This is my first year teaching at Turning Point Academy.  I taught at Emporia Middle School for the past four years.  I am an assistant coach for the Emporia High School softball team.  I enjoy playing recreational softball and volleyball.  I also like playing cards and board games.

Ryan Nichols - Music, PE

I grew up in the northeast Kansas town of Hiawatha.  During my school years I was very active in extracurricular events, including track, basketball, theater, band, choir, and American Legion baseball.  I also earned my Eagle Scout award in 1996.  After high school, I attended Baker University in Baldwin City, Kansas, where I graduated with a Bachelor of Music Education degree in 2004.  I also earned my Master of Music degree from Kansas State University in 2012.  This is my 11th year teaching, and my 3rd year at TPA.  In my career, I have taught all levels of music from kindergarten through high school, including band, choir, strings, and general music.  In addition to my teaching duties, I also have experience coaching high school track, cross country, and volleyball.  When I am not busy at school, I enjoy spending time with my wife, Courtney, and our 2 dogs, 2 cats, and our Betta fish.  I also enjoy riding my motorcycle, all things related to Star Trek, and I am a big fan of the Kansas City Royals, the Chiefs, and the Kansas Jayhawks.

Tammy Torrens - Counselor, Team Leadership, Instr. Coach

I have worked for the Emporia School District since 1992.  In that time I have been fortunate to have had the experience of teaching all grades K-12 and physical education, in addition to working as a reading strategist, an instructional coach and a student support specialist.  This year I am teaching Teen Leadership, designed by the Flippen Group, to grades 5-12.  This class is designed to teach students leadership, relational, and personal skills so that they are able to maximize their full potential as adults when they graduate.
