DWHS baseball is again combining with Riverside to help with the lack of participation. 10 DWHS students are playing this year and there are three new freshmen, Landen Amos, Grant Boos, and Jake Stroud.
Assistant Coach John Paolino said that he is very excited about baseball this year and that they are a great team but they need some work. He said that the team needs to work on hitting and agility. Coach Paolino said that they are wearing the Doniphan County American Legion uniforms and they are going to look cool and support both schools and not just one.
Sophomore Hayden Paolino said the team needs to work on hitting and just needs to put forth more hard work and effort. He also said that the freshmen have a bright future ahead of them and they have a lot of hard work to do. Hayden said the games are in Highland and Wathena, so it can be more accessible for Riverside and Highland to go and watch the kids play this year.
Landen Amos likes baseball because he likes doing the sprint workouts and he just really enjoys the friendship and enthusiasm on the field. Landen also likes baseball because it's a very competitive sport and takes a lot of practice and energy. Landen's favorite thing about baseball is batting in the batting cages, but it's very difficult to hit baseballs. He said you have to have a good eye and hand coronation.
Grant Boos likes baseball because he likes the catcher position and spending time with his favorite team members. Grant's hardest task is batting and playing catcher when Cooper Eberly is pitching. Grant said he enjoys the bus ride to Riverside and back from practice.
The first game is at Troy on Monday, March 18, 2024.
