April 10, 2012
VERMILLION, S.D. (SDAS) — The 97th Annual Meeting of the South Dakota Academy of Science will be held at the University of South Dakota's Muenster University Center in Vermillion on April 13-14. In addition to the planned symposia and poster session, this year's agenda includes a keynote address from Science magazine writer Sam Kean, author of The Disappearing Spoon. Kean's work has been featured on "Radiolab" and NPR's "All Things Considered," among others.
Sam Kean is a South Dakota native. His first book, The Disappearing Spoon, is a New York Times bestseller. The Disappearing Spoon follows carbon, neon, silicon, gold, and every single element on the table as they play out their parts in human history, finance, mythology, conflict, the arts, medicine, and the lives of the (frequently) mad scientists who discovered them. The lecture is free and open to the public and will be followed by a book signing.
