Free Dance Camp Offered in Columbus, NE
June 19-23

Congratulations to the Umóⁿhoⁿ Language & Culture Center (ULCC) department at our school!  A yearlong endeavor resulted in the first published Umóⁿhoⁿ Íye-wathe, ‘Let’s Speak Umóⁿhoⁿ’ Level 1 textbook.  The textbook came from a partnership between the ULCC, the Omaha Tribe and The Language Conservancy. The textbook honors the work of the late Marcella Woodhull Cayou,  Donna Morris Parker and Susan Freemont.  ULCC Director, Vida Stabler, began documentation 17 years ago which eventually led to the Level 1 textbook. The textbook will immediately benefit the language programs at Umóⁿhoⁿ Nation Public School, Walthill Public School, St. Augustine’s, the Nebraska Indian Community College and other programs in Macy beginning in August 2017.  Eventually, the Level 1 textbook will also be a resource to help teach Umóⁿhoⁿ language in other communities. I would like to acknowledge the work of ULCC Staff, Rufus White, Pat Phillips, Rex Webster, Evan Saunsoci, Karen Tyndall, Loretta Webster and Vida Stabler for their dedication to our children.  Also, Linguist Bryan James Gordon for all his careful hard work. Thank you all!

from 9 A.M. to 10:A.M.

Katie Renfro, UNPS Teacher Association President, attended the Delegates' Assembly in Lincoln. Members of different teacher associations across the state come together to discuss bylaws and issues. During this event, UNPS was awarded the Children's Fund Helping Hand Award for the second year in a row! UNPS received this award for the most contributed per member for the Nebraska's Children Fund.

On Wednesday, April 26, some of the high school students competed in the Nebraska State Quiz Bowl Tournament. We drove to Holdrege, NE for the competition. There were teams from all over the state competing. Our team won its first round against Brady High School. Unfortunately, we lost our next two rounds. All of the kids had a great time, and they were excited to have won a round at our first state competition.

Umoⁿhoⁿ Language Students Learn about Mushrooms

Ms. Kneifl’s 8th Grade Advisory class received a “crash course” in navigating drones.

Kellen Conroy from the ESU1, was at Omaha Nation Public School to teach a short workshop on how to use the Parrot drones and the Ipad technology to coordinate the commands to navigate the drones. Students were given landing and maneuver markers to launch their drones. Ms. Kneifl wants the students to consider career options that they might like to pursue. Drones offer an astonishing new aerial perspective with countless applications that cut across the disciplines, including science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM), as well as careers in films, media and journalism. Ms. Kneifl is hoping that this experience will spark an interest in a career that students might like from using drones in agriculture to journalism, and maybe even product delivery or fast food services.

March 28, 29, 30 Macy Townwide ‘Taking Care of Our Lands’

Dear Umonhon Nation Family,

It is with great sadness that I inform you of the death of two young members of our community. Yesterday we lost Hayla Morris, a freshman in our school and Donnette Blackbird, a 2015 graduate of our school. Both girls passed away due to injuries suffered in a car accident which occurred early Saturday morning.

Our school district has implemented a plan for responding to this tragic event, we are focused on helping our students and their families get back to regular learning and every day activities as soon as possible. Our teachers and counselors have been briefed on our plans and have received guidelines for discussing death and reactions to it.

There will be district and community mental health personnel available to students who need special attention and support on Monday (March 20th) as well as throughout the week if needed. We will try to maintain as normal of a routine and structure as possible. If you feel that your child or family needs some assistance, please contact us, and we will do everything we can to help you. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact the school at 402-837-5622.
