The experimental physics research activity of Dr. Michele Ortolani is focused on terahertz, far-infrared and mid-infrared spectroscopy and spectroscopic imaging with advanced experimental tools:

- Infrared synchrotron radiation and infrared free-electron lasers;

- Quantum cascade lasers and quantum-well sources and detectors;

- Spectroscopy of solids at low temperatures and low electromagnetic frequencies;

- Scanning near-field infrared microscopy and related nanofab developments.

2019-2022: UNIT COORDINATOR in a National Collaboration Project (PRIN) funded by the Italian Ministry of Research. Project title: “Metallic and Semi-metallic 2D Transition Metal Dichalcogenides”. AMOUNT OF GRANT for my Unit: 80.000 EUR/ 3 years.

2018-2020: TEAM MEMBER in a Future Emerging Technology (FET) Cooperation Project funded by the European Commission, Horizon2020 Program. Project title: “FLASH: Far-infrared Laser Assembled using Silicon Heterostructures”. AMOUNT OF GRANT for my Unit: 60.000 EUR/ 3 years.

2017-2020: PROJECT COORDINATOR of a competitive internal research call of Sapienza University of Rome. Project title: “A Mid-infrared Bloch Surface Wave laser sensor of biological macromolecules” AMOUNT OF GRANT: 45.000 EUR/ 3 years.

2017-2020: UNIT COORDINATOR in a National Collaboration Project (PRIN) funded by the Italian Ministry of Research. Project title: “Plasmon-enhanced vibrational circular dichroism”. AMOUNT OF GRANT for my Unit: 101.900 EUR/ 3 years.

2015-2017: UNIT COORDINATOR in a Future Emerging Technology (FET) Cooperation Project funded by the European Commission, 7th Framework program FP7. Project title: “GEMINI: Germanium Mid-Infrared Plasmonics for Sensing Applications”. AMOUNT OF GRANT for my Unit: 291.600 EUR/ 3 years.

2010-2014: PROJECT COORDINATOR of a National Young Investigator Grant FIRB Futuro in Ricerca funded by the Italian Ministry of Research. Project title: “Electrodynamics of two-dimensional electron gases for the detection of terahertz radiation”

2014: PRINCIPAL INVESTIGATOR of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory User Proposal, Molecular Foundry, Berkeley, USA. 3-month stay at LBNL in 2014.

2008-2012: POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW at Institute of Photonics and Nanotechnology CNR-IFN Rome, Italy. Development of antenna-coupled terahertz microelectronic devices.

2010: ORGANIZATION of the IEEE conference on IR, MM & THz waves in Rome, Italy.

2006-2007: POST-DOCTORAL FELLOW at the Synchrotron Radiation Facility BESSY II - Berlin, Germany, now Helmoltz Zentrum Berlin. Infrared spectroscopy for solid state physics, biology and instrument development.
