2. GOALS OF THE COURSE
The goal of this course is to describe the behaviour and to evaluate the performance of the main components (e.g. functional blocks) constituting the analogue and digital communication systems and the packet-switched data networks.


3. EXPECTED RESULTS
It is expected that the attending students will acquire the basic notions about architectures and related performance of both analogue and digital the TLC systems. For this purpose, the course also embraces 10 numerical exercitations, in order to allow the attending students to acquire a practical familiarity with the introduced concepts. A good underground of analogue and digital signal processing is demanded.


4. MAIN TOPICS OF THE COURSE
  • Communication system architectures: basic functionalities and services;
  • Analogue and digital communication systems: performance criteria;
  • Channel impairments, channel noise and capacity formulas;
  • Transmit/receive architectures;
  • Analogue modulations (AM and FM) and Frequency Division Multiplexing (FDM);
  • A/D conversion (PCM and DPCM) and Time Division Multiplexing (TDM);
  • Numerical sources and statistical models for data traffic;
  • Line codes and spectral shaping;
  • Memory-less digital modulations (OOK, PAM, QAM, PSK, FSK, PPM) and related differential formats;
  • Digital modulations with memory: CPM, CPFSK and GMSK;
  • Bandwidth and energy efficiency of digital modulation formats;
  • Linear  techniques for  data equalization.
