Enzo Baccarelli received his Master degree (summa cum laude) in Electronic Engineering from Sapienza University of Rome in 1989 and, then, acquired the PhD degree and Post-PhD degree in Information and Communication Engineering in 1993 and 1995, respectively. He was Assistant Professor (1996-1998) and, then, Associate Professor (1998-2004) at the INFOCOM Department of the Engineering Faculty at Sapienza University of Rome. Since 2004, he is full professor in Telecommunication Engineering at the DIET (formerly, INFOCOM) Department of Sapienza University of Rome. He spent the years 1994 and 1996 as visiting researcher at the Bell LabsCurrently, he is the director of the research activities of the Broadband Communication Systems laboratory (BroadComLabat the DIET Department of Sapienza University of Rome (see the Lab section of this page). His curriculum vitae and biographical sketch are reported by European Who's Who and American Contemporary Who's Who 2002/2003.

Research areas

Activity of project management and coordination
    As Senior Associate Researcher at the CNR-IIT institute of Pisa, Enzo Baccarelli was involved into several research projects on the design and deployment of space-division multiple access communication platforms and protocols. Furthermore, he covered the following roles of principal investigator:
  • scientific coordinator for the research unit of Rome for the project: NEWINTERNET (2004-2007)
  • scientific coordinator of the MIUR projects: PRIMA ALBA (2005-2006), IRON (2007-2009), WISENET1 (2010-2011), WISENET2 (2011-2012), V-FOG (2016-2017), V-FOG2 (2017-2018) and SoFT (2018-2019)
  • responsible of a sub-contract under the European projects: IST-DELIS (2004-2006), FP7-STREP: “Smart hoMes for All - SM4All” (2007-2009)

Research contracts
    Concerning the responsibility of research contracts, Enzo Baccarelli was the principal investigator of several contracts funded by Telecom Italia Learning Services, Ericsson Labs and CNR-IIT Institute of Pisa. These research contracts focused on the design and deployment of  content delivery wired/radio networks for the QoS support of broadband multimedia services.

Involvement in standardisation bodies and panels
    Enzo Baccarelli is/was member of some international committees, as the IEEECOMSOC Personal Communications and the DSL Forum. Concerning the membership of evaluation panels at national level, he was involved in the Technical Board of Telecom Italia and he was a member of some evaluation sub-panels designed by MIUR under the CIVR initiative for the Aero-Space Sciences and Industrial and Information Engineering areas. Furthermore, he served/serves as referee for the evaluation of a number of PRIN projects. At European level, in 2004, he was a member of the European Exploratory Workshop Commission, as well as involved into several panels for the evaluation of IST-oriented European projects under the umbrella of the VII Work Programme. Currently, he is member of some evaluation panels of the Israel Science Foundation.
