Alessandro Muscio is a Full Professor of Applied Economics at the Department of Social Sciences (DiSS), University of Foggia (Italy), with over 20 years of experience in academic research and policy evaluation in the fields of research and innovation, technology transfer, university–industry relations, and Industry 4.0. [1][2] He earned a Ph.D. in Economics of Production and Development from Insubria University (Italy) and holds a Master’s degree in Development Economics from the University of Sussex (UK). He has been a Marie Curie Fellow in Science and Technology Policy Studies at SPRU, University of Sussex, and previously served as an Assistant Professor at LUISS Guido Carli in Rome. Alessandro has also been an Erasmus visiting scholar at the Polytechnic University of Valencia, and at the University of Bordeaux.
With a diverse professional background, Alessandro has contributed as a Science & Technology Policy Specialist at Technopolis Group in Brighton (UK), and as associate researcher at the Centre for European Policy Studies (CEPS) in Brussels (BE). He currently serves as a board member of the European Future Innovation System Centre (EFIS), Brussels. His involvement extends to various studies for the European Commission (EC) and national government agencies, including acting as the rapporteur for the EC Policy Support Facility's "Specific Support to Tunisia" and contributing to the World Bank initiative "Europe 4.0: Addressing the Digital Dilemma". Alessandro is currently involved in the design of the new European Innovation Scoreboard (EIS) and the Regional Innovation Scoreboard (RIS) 2024-2027.
A significant portion of Alessandro's academic research focuses on research and innovation policy, technology transfer, and academic entrepreneurship. He has led a research unit in a project on the "Governance of Technology Transfer," funded by the Italian Ministry of University and Research (MUR). Additionally, he served as the teaching coordinator for a corporate master's program in international business engineering at Finmeccanica SpA (now Leonardo SpA). Currently, Alessandro is the principal investigator in a PRIN-MUR project on "women’s inclusion in innovation and entrepreneurship."
In his current roles, Alessandro serves as the scientific delegate of the University of Foggia within the Apulian IT Productive District and as the research delegate for his university department.
