WE ARE TRIO.
TRIO Student Support Services has been my backbone since I entered this campus. The academic advisers have the ability to meet with a smaller cohort of students than many other advisers on campus and therefore have more interpersonal relationships with the students. TRIO Student Support Services saw what others may not have seen; they saw me and my potential. That's what TRIO is all about. - Cheniqua Johnson (Family Social Science)
When you look at these other TRIO students, faculty, and staff, they are all incredible, and you think 'Gosh, they are brilliant.' We have ideas and innovations inside of us. We lean on each other, and we're a community. Sometimes, it may feel like you are not supposed to be here but you do. You really do. - Troy Wildenberg (Family Social Science)
have been in TRIO since I was in high school and I felt that being in TRIO seemed like you are excluded from the rest, but in reality you will grow to love TRIO because TRIO will become not only a huge support system on campus but your second family. - Candace Bunyan (Elementary Education)
TRIO SSS MISSION
OUR MISSION: Grounded in the Civil Rights Movement, TRIO Student Support Services (SSS) strives to ensure access and equal opportunity education for University of Minnesota students who are first-generation in college, low-income, students with disabilities, or students for whom English is not their first language. Through inclusive and accessible services, including academic support, counseling, teaching, and advocacy, the SSS program seeks to remove institutional and cultural barriers, foster a climate that values the social and cultural capital of our students, and promote retention to graduation.
TRIO is a set of federally-funded college opportunity programs that motivate and support students from disadvantaged backgrounds in their pursuit of a college degree. 790,000 low-income, first-generation students and students with disabilities — from sixth grade through college graduation — are served by over 2,800 programs nationally. There are 8 TRIO programs nationally, including: Upward Bound, McNair Scholars, Talent Search, and our program, Student Support Services, amongst others. TRIO programs provide academic tutoring, personal counseling, mentoring, financial guidance, and other supports necessary for educational access and retention.
