I am a Lecturer (Assistant Professor) in the Department of Political Science and International Studies (POLSIS) at the University of Birmingham. 

I am also a Non-Resident Fellow at the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft.

I was previously a Grand Strategy, Security, and Statecraft Fellow jointly appointed at the International Security Program, Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs, Harvard Kennedy School and the Security Studies Program, MIT.  I was also a Hans J. Morgenthau Fellow at the Notre Dame International Security Center.

I received my  Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Minnesota in August of 2020. I also have a PGCHE in Higher Education and am a Fellow of AdvanceHE. 

I study international security, grand strategy, and civil-military relations, with a specific focus on the domestic politics of great power politics and the politics of military service. I have methodological interests in automated text analysis, content analysis, and survey research. 

My book project examines the politics of international decline and "declinism."

My work has appeared (or will be appearing) in Security Studies; International Studies Quarterly; Perspectives on Politics; Politics, Groups, and Identities; The Journal of Global Security Studies; Armed Forces & Society; Journal of Human Rights Practice; Environmental Communication; and The Oxford Research Encyclopedia of Politics. Additionally, my work has appeared in popular outlets such as Foreign Affairs, Foreign PolicyThe Washington Post/Made by History, War on the Rocks, The Conversation, and The Duck of Minerva.
