THANK YOU!
As Dean Schwartz announced at the Humphrey School Assembly in December, the Humphrey will be undergoing a diversity strategic and action planning process this semester. The One Humphrey, One Community (OHOC) sub-committee of the Diversity Committee is coordinating the process, in which we hope you will all participate.
Why this is important for you:
If you have ideas or experience with issues related to diversity, we need them. However, while we recognize the value of expertise and the input of those who have spent a lot of time thinking about these issues, we also believe that effective visioning can only happen as a full community and that fresh perspectives can help us anticipate unintended consequences and unearth our own assumptions. Whatever your level of engagement in the past, your participation in this process is vital.
This plan impacts the experience that each of us has working and studying at the Humphrey, thus we all have a stake in its creation. Moreover, these conversations are an important part of each of our personal preparations to fulfill the School’s mission “to advance the common good in a diverse world.”
Alumni, your contributions are needed as well. We believe that you are uniquely positioned to provide valuable insight into the plan. Your perspective—as a simultaneous insider and outsider—allows you to reflect on and evaluate your own experience, as well as enhance the experience of future generations of Humphrey students. By participating in these sessions, you will solidify this linkage.
Why this is important for the School:
With a constantly rotating student body, work around issues of diversity can lack continuity, resulting in continually “reinventing the wheel.” A strategic and action plan will help provide stability to our goals and strategies, even as the people behind them change. Through this process, we hope to move from the vague to the concrete and measurable around our goals for diversity. This will allow us to both celebrate benchmarks as they are achieved and hold the School accountable when we fall short.
How we’re thinking about the process:
We believe in the benefit of multiple and diverse viewpoints, creating space for honesty, and ensuring privacy. We also believe that this strategic and action planning process offers the opportunity to build our deliberative and creative capacity as a community.
We are staggering the timing of each process steps to accommodate as many schedules as possible. We are also trying to maximize the number of points of entry, and gladly welcome your input even if you are unable to participate in the formal process.
A quick history:
Last spring, the students, staff and faculty members that comprise the One Humphrey One Community working group of the Humphrey School Diversity Committee held the Second Annual Circle Dialogue on race and ethnicity for students, staff and faculty. One of the issues raised in this event by several students was that the Humphrey School had no clear plan to guide and coordinate its current and future initiatives that focus on diversity.
This fall the working group began discussing how the wider Humphrey community could come together to create a plan, which included the Humphrey School's goals, aspirations, and strategies regarding diversity. Upon his arrival, Dean Schwartz was very supportive of this effort and appointed an external Advisory Committee to support and guide us throughout the process. The participatory process and development of the strategic and action plan will occur during the 2012 spring semester.
The role of OHOC and the Diversity Committee:
OHOC, as a part of the Diversity Committee, will be coordinating the process and using the results to craft a strategic and action plan. However, we will not be controlling the content of the plan. Members of the committee will participate in the process alongside other members of the Humphrey community and will contribute content in this way only.
