Group/Event Grants

Group/Event Grant applications are now open.  See links below.  Applications will be considered on a rolling basis (see submission and review dates below).

NOTE: You may only submit one grant application for any one event.

Community Grant Descriptions and Applications

Graduate Student Event Grant

COGS Graduate Student Event Grants are intended to support the development of intellectual and social community across graduate disciplines and among graduate students at different stages in their studies.  
Grants must be used for a single event or a series of related events that occur within the same semester.  These events must be open to and marketed to all graduate students.

  • Maximum of $500, not to exceed 70% of the total budget for the event.
  • Applicants should demonstrate efforts to obtain alternate funding from other sources. 
  • Proposal authors are expected to volunteer their time; stipends for the organizing team will not be considered.  

New Program Development Grant

COGS New Program Development Grants provide two semesters of funding for events or programs that are intended to be repeated over multiple semesters or years.  These grants are intended to help groups demonstrate the viability of their events and provide support as alternate sources of funding are established for future events.

  • Maximum of $1000
  • Funding can extend over two semesters, the first being the semester the application is approved

Student Group Development Grant

Student Group Development Grants are intended for new graduate student groups that do not yet receive Student Services Fees funding.  

  • Maximum of $2,000 per semester
  • Student group must be registered with Student Unions and Activities

Passthrough Event/Program Reimbursement

Passthrough Event/Program Reimbursements are available to graduate and professional councils seeking reimbursement for an event listed in the Passthrough section of COGS and PSG’s 2016-2017 Student Services Fees applications.

  • Separate applications are required for each event or program.


Applicants for COGS Community grants are usually student groups, and it is highly recommended that individuals applying for these grants affiliate with a student group that will sponsor the event. Student groups should designate a primary contact person for their application.

Events and activities are eligible for funding so long as they occur during the 2016-2017 academic year.  

Grant funds are intended to serve graduate students.  Although other groups (undergraduates, professional students, faculty) may also participate in the events/groups, you will be asked to disclose the percentage of graduate students in your group or expected to attend your event.

Funding will not cover purchases of equipment (cameras, computers, furniture, etc.). Proposals for house parties or research will not be considered. These funds cannot support charities and cannot be used to pay for the expenses of alcohol.

A detailed budget form is required of all grant applications.  Use the template to share your complete budget. Please save as a PDF titled x500_budget (replace “x500” with your x500 number, which is the part of your email before

NOTE: You will be required to submit receipts in order to receive your funding.  Be sure to save all receipts associated with your event(s)!

Submission Deadlines and Review Dates

In order to be considered in the next review meeting, grants must be submitted by 11:59 p.m. on the dates listed in the table.  Applications not submitted prior to 11:59 on the designated submission deadline will not be reviewed until the review date associated with the next deadline.

Rules of the grant program and grant applications are subject to change at any time by the COGS Executive Board.  Nothing on this website or in the grant application is intended to bind the COGS Executive Board with one exception: the non-discrimination statement immediately below.
