John Coleman, Dean of the College of Liberal Arts

John Coleman is dean of the College of Liberal Arts and a professor of political science. Before coming to CLA in August 2014, Dean Coleman had a distinguished career as a scholar and administrator. Most recently, he was chair of the political science department and a Lyons Family Faculty Fellow at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he taught for over 20 years. He received the Chancellor’s Distinguished Teaching Award and other awards for his teaching, research, and academic service and leadership.

Kathryn Louis, Chief of Staff

Kathryn Louis graduated with honors from department the Department of Classical and Near Eastern Studies at the University of Minnesota, and has held numerous administrative appointments within the College of Liberal Arts. Most recently, Katie served as assistant to the chair in the Department of Political Science before becoming senior assistant to the dean under interim dean Bud Duvall. She has served as John Coleman's chief of staff since 2014. Katie manages the work of the dean and oversees dean's office operations, while coordinating with other units. Katie's deep knowledge of our college and departments informs the excellent work being done around CLA's Roadmap, and facilitates interdepartmental and cross-college collaboration. 


Ellen Miller, Executive Assistant to the Dean

Ellen Miller is responsible for managing the operations of the Dean's Office as well as a range of college-wide administrative and governance processes. In addition, Ellen provides administrative expertise and executive-level support to the dean and chief of staff. Prior to joining CLA, she served as the senior administrative specialist to the chancellor at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater and as the manager of the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater Foundation. Ellen's passion for the liberal arts began with her experience at Luther College, a small liberal arts college in Decorah, Iowa, where she earned a BA in English and History. She brings a multitude of experience and a proven track record of success in supporting senior level management and multiple team leaders. 

Derk Renwick, Assistant to the Chief of Staff

Derk Renwick is an alumnus of the University of Minnesota's Master of Arts in Religions in Antiquity and bachelor's degree programs in religious studies and Jewish studies. He is currently studying comparative literature in the Department of Cultural Studies and Comparative Literature and serving as the assistant to the chief of staff in the Office of the Dean, College of Liberal Arts. His current research interests include the philosophy of aesthetics: the sublime, dialectic, biblical studies and critical pedagogy.
