Bohemian Flats: Connections to the City

This site was developed for Anthropology 4101: Archival Analysis for Anthropologists at the University of Minnesota.

With the help of archival maps, historic newspapers, and first-person letters and memoirs, we have researched Bohemian Flats, an immigrant community from the late 19th and early 20th centuries in Minneapolis, MN.

Our main focus of our project was to determine how physically, socially, economically, culturally, and contemporaneously connected Bohemian Flats and its residents were to the surrounding Minneapolis community.  This question is still relevant for immigrants and immigrant communities today, and by understanding how Bohemian Flats residents were connected, or disconnected, from Minneapolis, we hope to shed light on the historic and modern immigrant experience as well as offer insight to how that experience can be improved.
