International Student & Scholar Services (ISSS)

ISSS Academic Counseling & Support
ISSS offers Academic Counseling for international undergraduate students. Academic Counseling appointments are usually one hour and are scheduled with an ISSS Academic Counselor. Academic Counseling can help international students adjust to the U.S. and University of Minnesota, improve study skills, and provide support for situations like academic probation.

Eases the transition of new undergraduate international students through peer mentorship. New students communicate with current U.S. and international undergraduate students before they arrive on campus!
Groups of international and U.S. students meeting weekly during semesters to share cross-cultural experiences, personal thoughts, and feelings in a relaxed atmosphere. Examples of the topics discussed in the past are culture shock, cultural customs, friendship/relationships, communication styles.

Students Crossing Borders
An on-campus living community bringing international and domestic students together that gives residents a global experience through interactive cross-cultural learning. This experience will enhance your intercultural communication and knowledge of other peoples of the world!

Students Crossing Borders is located on two floors of Middlebrook Hall. The community features student staff specifically selected to provide programming and events tailored to this unique population of students.

Student Academic Success Services (SASS)

Academic Skills Coaching
Meet with a SASS consultant to learn about U.S. classroom culture and expectations and skills to be a successful student in the U.S.


Face to Face Exchanges
Meet with a language partner, either individually or a group, to learn about U.S. culture from other students and practice English.

UC 1005

UC 1005: Global Perspectives on Higher Education (2 cr)
In a 2 credit course, students examine and process the values, contexts, and goals of the American higher education as it compares to their previous experiences.

Meet with a counselor to find help and support in adjusting to life in the U.S., culture shock, and managing homesickness.

Multicultural Center for Academic Excellence (MCAE)

Common Connections is a program designed to foster friendships between international and domestic students through fun activities, cooperative civic engagement, cultural sharing, and increased awareness of US diversity. Learn tips from your fellow students about getting adjusted to life here in the US.  

MCAE offers benefits such as free 1:1 academic coaching and opportunities to engage on campus and in the community. Please visit the MCAE website to learn about more these and other opportunities.
