About Dr. Traynor

John Traynor is the Edward F Domino Professor of Research in Pharmacology, and Professor of Medicinal Chemistry in the College of Pharmacy.  He is Treasurer-Elect of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics (ASPET) and a standing member of Neurobiology of Motivated Behavior Study Section of CSR (Center for Scientific Review) of the National Institutes of Health.  Dr. Traynor has served as Director of the University of Michigan’s Substance Abuse Research Center (2008-2012), as a member of the Medical School’s Biomedical Research Council (2010-2016), as a permanent member of National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) Training and Career Development Committee (to 2014) and on the editorial boards of Journal of Neurochemistry and the Journal of Medicinal Chemistry.  He was President of the International Narcotics Research Conference (INRC, 2010-2014).   In 2015-2016, Dr. Traynor was the recipient of an Endowment for the Basic Sciences Recognition Award for his outstanding research contributions.

Teaching

Dr. Traynor lectures on aspects of basic pharmacology and the pharmacology of certain drug classes with an emphasis on medications to manage pain and drugs of abuse.  He teaches in the Pharmacology Department, in the Medical School and in the Dental School.  Dr. Traynor was Chair of the Graduate Program in Pharmacology (to 2015) and the recipient of the Endowment for the Basic Sciences Teaching Award in Pharmacology for 2013-2014.
