Mitchell J. Rycus, Professor Emeritus of Urban Planning
From 1986 till 1992 Dr. Rycus served as Chairman of the University of Michigan's Urban Planning Program, and received emeritus status in June of 2000. He served as Co-director of the Studies in Urban Security Group (SUSG), for over twenty years. SUSG provided consulting for the city of Detroit's Police, Fire/EMS and Water Departments. Dr. Rycus has worked with the University of Michigan's Safety and Security Task Force on perceptions of campus safety. In 1997 he helped prepare three reports on international water security methods, and emergency response planning for the United States' President's Commission on Critical Infrastructure Protection. Dr. Rycus has traveled extensively examining international crime reduction methods for planners. He has carried out research at the University of Tokyo's Research Center for Advanced Science and Technology, and the United Nations Centre for Social Development and Humanitarian Affairs in Vienna, Austria, as well as a number of other organizations throughout the world.
Professor Rycus has considerable experience in conducting workshops using Gaming-Simulation techniques. He has conducted risk analysis/vulnerability assessment workshops for communities, water departments, school systems and other organizations. Prof. Rycus has designed and conducted mock exercises with the City of Detroit's Water and Sewerage Department annually for almost twenty years. He co-designed and facilitated an Urban Terrorism Workshop for the City of Detroit. While employed by the University of Michigan Extension Gaming Service, he was responsible for the running and redesigning of simulation games for various private and public agencies, such as, the Army Corps of Engineers‑Board of Rivers and Harbors, City of Ann Arbor, University faculty and various university level courses. Prof. Rycus taught an undergraduate course, People, Energy and Environment, for over twenty years; a broad ranging course covering energy related technical and social concepts, and examining the impact of energy resource usage and governmental policies on the environment.
