WHO WE ARE
OPIS is made up of more than 600 Michigan Law students supporting the public interest community and pursuing careers in public interest law. The OPIS board is a small group of students responsible for coordinating the OPIS community and is staffed by one or more leadership chairs; several events chairs; a treasurer; two mentorship chairs; one or more 1L class representatives; a Pro Bono Board liaison; and an advocacy chair. OPIS welcomes students who want to work in any type of public interest law, including government; public defense; prosecution; civil legal services; civil rights and impact litigation; environmental law; and more.
WHY WE DO IT
OPIS exists to support students looking to enact positive change in the world through their legal education. Given the challenges in achieving that goal, OPIS provides the support students need through education, outreach, and a broad community of advocates. Public interest law is fascinating, fun, and infinitely rewarding--it is our mission to impress upon the student body the enormous benefits of working in public interest law.
