Welcome to Project Horizon!

Project Horizon aims to meet the changing technical needs of the university by delivering a streamlined and robust portfolio of IT services best suited to building a world-class computing environment to support the academic and research missions of U-M. This project will work closely with the U-M IT community to:

  • Evaluate the technology behind many older ITS products and services
  • Form an understanding as to how these services are used and their importance to units across campus
  • Determine the viability of maintaining these legacy systems
  • Where appropriate, identify and transition to alternative products and services
The project's guiding principles are to provide significant advance notice before changes are made to a service. We have a coordinated project plan and communication approach, so customers receive timely and consistent messages.

These services will be transitioned to NextGen solutions:

  • MySQL Database Hosting to MiDatabase
  • Virtualization as a Service (VaaS) to MiServer
These services will be retired:
  • MBlog
  • Computer Power and Patch Management (CPPM)
These services will remain active and available, but will be further evaluated:
  • AFS* Group and Individual Storage
  • Web Application Hosting (including Virtual Hosting)
  • Drupal Hosting
  • MediaWiki
  • Oracle Hosting
  • HTML Web Pages

* AFS is also known as IFS or MFile
