Google Mail Keyboard Shortcuts - Windows

Note 1: Keyboard shortcuts for Google Mail can be turned on or off. There are three ways to do this:
  • Go to http://mail.google.com/mail/?kbd=1. This automatically turns shortcuts on.
  • Click the Gear icon at the top right of any Google Mail page to pull down a menu. From this menu, select Settings. On the Settings page, look for the Keyboard Shortcuts option and choose the Keyboard Shortcuts On option.
  • In Google Mail, press Shift+? to bring up the shortcuts list. There is an option in the middle of the screen to enable or disable shortcuts.
Note 2: The "Custom Keyboard Shortcuts" Labs function lets you change the keys used for existing shortcuts. Particularly helpful if a standard shortcut conflicts with your assistive technology. More information on Labs functions

Note 3: For most of these commands to work, your keyboard focus needs to not be in a text box, such as the Search field (otherwise, pressing the key will simply type in the text box). To ensure the focus is not in a text box, press Escape.

Note 4: In Google Mail, messages are grouped into "conversations." For example, if person A sends a message to person B, person B responds, and then sends the message with a comment to person C, all three messages would be included in a single conversation. When you are reviewing your inbox, you will see conversations rather than individual messages. However, if you are accessing your email via Outlook or a similar client rather than a browser, messages will be continued to be listed individually rather than grouped into conversations.
