Hindi Yakshagana "Panchavati"

posted Aug 26, 2013, 8:42 AM by Dr. Tanika L. Hall

You are invited to a performance by Yaksha Manjusha, a folk arts troupe of high repute from south India (Karnataka), who will stage in Hindi (with English subtitles) Panchavati, the story of Surpanakha, from the Ramayana, one of two great epics of India. The Ramayana tells the story of Rama (an avatar of the Hindu Supreme-God Vishnu), whose wife Sita is abducted by the king of Ravan. In the portion of the story being performed at UMBC, the scheming demoness Surpanakha, one of the most important characters in the Ramayana, gets her nose cut off by Prince Rama. The show will very colorful, melodramatic and thrilling to watch, so please pass the word to your family and friends.

The performance is scheduled for Friday. September 6 at 7 pm in UMBC’s Fine Arts Recital Hall (Room 118). Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and senior citizens. Tickets may be purchased at the University Commons (main desk), by calling 410.455.2094. They will also be available at the door.

The event is being organized by the Asian Studies Program, with the co-sponsorship of the Departments of Dance, Music, and Theatre as well at the Dean’s Office, College of Arts, Humanities and Social Sciences. All profits from the event will support the UMBC Study Abroad program for Asian Studies majors.
