2019 Guide to CNC Router Bits – All You Need to Know

  1. Download VCarve pro 10 trial edition.
  2. Convert your trial edition into a makerspace client edition
    1. Go to help-about and enter our code copy and paste this BF696-6C02F-20C5D-41A93-7E844-0E1EB-D4A32
    2. Your trial version now becomes a "client" edition. 
  3. Create your designs and tool paths and save them to your laptop or your USB Drive
  4. At UMakers Open the V-Carve Makerspace edition. 10.xxx 
  5. Open your crv file made at home in the makerspace edition. 
  6. Open the shopbot controller) Run your file.

    • The only CNC router bits we have and will use are the Router Bit Starter Kit.

    • Shopbot Tools Router bit Speeds and Feeds Charts. 

    • We do not carry all the different bits available! If you break a bit, you should replace it please. 

    • Members who become heavy users of the CNC router purchase their own bits.  

    • Software. We use Vetric's V-Carve Pro Mostly.  or Autodesk Fusion 360 .

  2. Required: Closed toed-shoes; remove dangling jewelry; wear short sleeves; tie back long hair. UMakers will provide Safety Glasses, hearing protection and a dust mask. 

    Project: A small sign (18"x 25") of your design on 1/2" MDF 

    Once you take and successfully pass this class, you can use this equipment for your projects whenever you work at UMakers as a member!

    For this cut we had the machine set for RPM: 18,000 | Feed: 90 IPM | Depth: Half the diameter of the router bit 1/4" "O" Flute, spiral Upcut

  • Break text into 2 separate lines
  • Copy top text to top layer- make invisible inactive
  • Select 1 line of text, convert to curves, then group 
  • Select 2nd line of text, convert to curves, then group
  • Select both groups then weld together, then group both
  • Move to layer Bottom Text change to red and keep active
  • Label layer 1 as border layer
  • Select pocket with small and clearing bits
  • Use vector selector
  • Select top and border depth of 0 top and .1 bottom
  • Associate with toolpath
  • Name as pocket top text
  • Leave start depth at .1 and make cut depth .1
  • Select border and bottom text 
  • Name as pocket Bottom text
