Facilities Planning & Construction

FP&C Summer Projects

This summer will be a very busy one for Facilities Planning and Construction, with a number of major projects to be completed.

East Campus Residence Hall, Phase 1

This project is the first of a four-phase plan to develop East Campus housing exclusively for first-year students.

In phase one, two new residence halls are being built on the former site of the Gilbert complex. The new residence halls will house 767 students and host the Residence Life and Housing Assignments offices.

These residence halls are expected to enhance the first-year experience and will be ready for new students in August.

Carpenter Sports Building Renovation/Expansion

The Carpenter Sports Building addition, scheduled for completion in August, will offer more space and more opportunities for students to stay fit.

Improvements to the current CSB include refinished gym floors, new lighting, painting and restroom upgrades. These changes will be complete by November.

Interdisciplinary Science and Engineering Laboratory (ISE Lab)

The ISE Lab will be complete in June, with minor work throughout the building continuing into the fall. The ISE Lab will include undergraduate science teaching labs, general purpose classrooms and state-of-the-art research laboratories.

The research wing will include an imaging and microscopy suite, a nanoprocessing facility, a synthesis lab and an advanced materials characterization lab.

The building is designed to create a collaborative environment and features problem-based learning labs connected to classrooms, allowing students to discuss a problem and immediately test a solution.

Alison Hall Renovations

Scheduled for completion in late May, the Alison Hall renovations project will include a new roof and upgrades to floor, wall, ceiling and restroom finishes.

Other updates include water system replacements, a new fire alarm and sprinkler system, electrical and elevator upgrades, a new emergency generator and a new data/communication system.

Perkins Student Center Renovation

The space formerly occupied by the University Bookstore will be refurbished to include new meeting places for students and office space for Registered Student Organizations. The project is due to be completed in the fall.

Academy Street Dining and Residence Halls

Construction will begin in June on a new dining and residence hall facility planned to occupy the site of the tennis courts adjacent to Academy Street and across from the Perkins Student Center. The project will be completed in August 2015.

Harrington Renovation

Work will begin in June to renovate the Harrington Residence Halls and Commons. The scope of work planned includes new interior finishes and updated mechanical, electrical, plumbing and life safety systems.

The commons area will be renovated to include an updated fitness center and convenience store.

Construction will be completed in August 2015.

Small Projects Process Improvement Workshop

A workshop to improve small project delivery was recently held for members of the Facilities and Auxiliary Services team, as well as several other University groups.

Participants learned how to use techniques to develop an action plan to shorten the time it takes to complete projects that are generally less than $100,000 in value.

The group worked together to come up with an action plan to improve customer satisfaction, reduce waste and shorten project execution time. A follow-up workshop will be held this summer or early fall.

The workshop and techniques were also presented at the Mid-Atlantic Region Society for College and University Planning conference on April 8th. Kathy Comisiak helped present findings from the workshop to illustrate how the tactics the group learned could solve problems faced by Facilities.
