Information on Working with Me

Prerequisite: One of the courses: MTH 367, MTH 369, MTH 411, MTH 412, MTH 543 (for Mathematical Clinic only), or equivalent.
Coding in R or Pmustython.
Writing.
Graduate students are required to use LaTex to create reports and presentations. You don't need to know LaTex before working with me.
Graduate students must read research articles, including theorems and proofs.

PS. You need to know how to code before taking MTH 480 or 541. You can take MTH 209 to learn R.

I have high standards. If you are used to completing work at the last minute, I am not a good option for being your advisor.
Attendance at the weekly meetings throughout the semester is mandatory. Missing these meetings without a valid reason will not be tolerated. In the event of a scheduling conflict, you must inform me in advance to reschedule or update the progress via email. Canceling a meeting without a legitimate excuse is unprofessional and will not be accepted. Please be aware that failing to attend more than three meetings will result in failing the course.
The students who take MTH 480 with me are expected to create a 5-minute intro video for the capstone project at the end of the semester.
Graduate students are expected to come to have an independent study with me in the semester before taking MTH 541.
You will need to use Trello, a web-based list-making application, to follow up on your progress.
Graduate students are expected to be capable of working on theoretical proofs.

Be independent. Don’t always ask what you have to do. Think about what you want to do and discuss it with me.
You should manage your time well and prepare for each meeting.
Ask Google first when you have questions regarding coding in R or Python. Finding solutions is also part of learning. You are welcome to ask me questions regarding coding when you have difficulty finding the solutions online (this means I should not be able to find the solutions within 5 minutes on Google search).
Work hard & work smart.

MTH 415 is required for undergraduates.
For the graduate students who want to work on the mathematical clinic associated with machine learning, you must have an independent study with me for at least one semester before taking MTH 541.
