The specific title of Our Lady of the Angels refers to “...Mary’s place of honor with her son in the Kingdom of Heaven where Christ is King and Mary is Queen Mother. It is a place of honor because she is placed over the wonderful creatures of God called angels who serve as God’s messengers and as guardians for individuals” ( In short, Mary is identified as being the Blessed Mother of all angels who in turn are guardians for humankind. This version of Mary is also often referred to as the Queen of Angels. The pope recognized August 5th as the day of dedication of the Church of Our Lady of the Angels in Rome in 1561. Word about her spread to Mexico, specifically Mexico City and Tecaxic. In 1595, Mexico City established the title of Our Lady of the Angels. Here she is better known as Our Lady of the Assumption. She is recognized for her great work and delivering the town from floods. In Tecaxic, there is a known legend that a “...mysterious light and music came from the image of Our Lady of Angels under in 1684 and that, although exposed to elements, has remained preserved” (Atlas).

In 1405, there was a chapel called “St. Mary of the Angels” located in Assisi. It had this name due to the belief that angels had actually appeared there. St. Francis first arrived in 1207 and found that the Church had fallen. Jesus appeared and asked Francis to rebuild it. Francis thought that Jesus meant to physically fix it but really, he meant that he needed to fix the church as the community of believers. St. Francis brought people together and founded his order of Franciscans in this chapel. He carried out an act in faith similar to that of Mary, acting as a guardian for humankind.

August Queen of Heaven!

Sovereign Mistress of the angels!

Thou who from the beginning

hast received from God

the power and mission to crush the head of Satan,

we humbly beseech thee

to send thy holy Legions,

that, under thy command

and by thy power,

they may pursue the evil spirits,

encounter them on every side,

resist their bold attacks

and drive them hence into the abyss of eternal woe.

Hail Mary
