Description
In 1696, in the village of Guápulo, a bishop named don Sancho de Andrade y Figueroa was ill and decided to pray a novena for his health. A procession soon formed and on December 30 he saw an image of Mary in the clouds after which he was healed. The image of Our Lady of the Cloud is painted on a linen cloth, depicted standing on a cloud that looks like a pedestal and wearing a crown on her head. In one arm she holds the Christ Child and in the other a bouquet of white lilies.
The apparition is now commemorated annually with a procession on the 1st of January. A sanctuary devoted to the image was constructed by Franciscan friars, where the celebration and procession are centered. While the image originally appeared in Ecuador, the Peruvian people have also adopted the image. Devotion to Our Lady of Peace is particularly strong in Lima, Perú. The prioress of the Monastery of the Nazarene Mothers, Mother Barbara Josefa of the Holy Trinity received permission to have an image of Our Lady painted on a linen to be carried in a procession through Lima.
