I am from Hong Kong and have become a graduate student of the Linguistics Department of UC San Diego since 2016. My research life in linguistics began with a small-scale investigation of referential specificity (e.g. I like a certain individual vs According to the law, if a certain individual commits murder...) and its grammatical encoding in Cantonese Chinese, which is my mother tongue, some years ago.

With a belief in compositionality, my work focuses on identifying the grammatical behavior and semantic ingredients of functional elements (such as nominal determinatives, sentence-final particles, and interjections) in Cantonese and Mandarin Chinese, and their cross-linguistic implications to theories of general linguistics and philosophy of language. I am particularly interested in the association of modality and/or speaker's attitude with grammatical elements. Recent research topics of mine include the relations between nominal elements and (non-)specificity, the interaction between negation and assertion in forming utterances loaded with stance.
