I used this first lesson in second grade classrooms to introduce myself to students and review my role as a school counselor. I always want students to know that my job is about helping them, and I help them through classroom lessons, small groups, individual counseling, and consulting with parents and teachers. We read the book In My Heart and used the book to think about our own feelings and that it is also helpful to notice how other people feel.

We focused on bullying prevention during this lesson. Students learned what bullying is and differences between a bullying situation and a mean moment. Then, we learned the importance of reporting bullying situations to an adult at school as soon as possible. While reading the book The Invisible Boy, students practiced things they can say or do to be an upstander to prevent bullying.

During these lessons, we are learning to be problem solvers! Students are learning and practicing specific problem solving strategies. First, we reviewed differentiating between small problems and big problems. Big problems are unsafe or dangerous, and we should ask for help from our teacher or another adult right away. Small problems are things that we can first try to solve by ourself. Students are learning to ignore, walk away, talk it out, apologize, and take a break.
