At this meeting we reviewed preliminary results of the sleep survey our students took in May. We also continued to review and discuss the implementation of the new schedule.

At first look the survey data looks very compelling and may well provide some valuable insights into our student sleep patterns. We are currently completing an in-depth analysis of the data and have scheduled another meeting in mid-July to review. We will share the data with our community in the early fall.

We reviewed the implementation “Action Plan” developed by administration. We were pleased to see that meaningful progress is being made in all areas of implementation. Some key items of note are:

All Elementary schools are working on having an 8:30 am drop off for students. Logistics are still being worked out however all principals agree that this can be offered. Please look for information from your specific school for details. The transportation department is working to keep elementary bus pick ups as early as possible, and similar to this past year. The early student drop off time as well as the bus pick up schedules will allow for more students to have the opportunity to eat breakfast at our elementary schools. This will be a very positive outcome of some of the changes in our structure.

Our transportation department has scheduled a review and analysis of bus routing with Transfinder, a transportation consultant company that provide our current routing software. We are hoping to find efficiencies to positively impact secondary student early pick-up times.

Teachers will have some flexibility in extended Monday hours for the coming school year. This will help with their personal – family schedules. We appreciate our staff’s flexibility as we implement these changes

With the high school and middle school administration and with the new Supervisor of Athletics, Mr. Patrick Crater, we are working on adjusting the away game dismissal schedule for athletic teams for the coming school year. A 2:20 dismissal will be the standard to reduce the amount of time student athletes will miss from their last period class. There will be situations where teams will need to leave earlier based on the distance they have to travel.

We finalized a pre and post survey for students related to their sleepiness during the school year. This survey was implemented in Late May with all of our fourth – eleventh graders.

We also developed a plan to involve students in a focus group this coming year to provide feedback to administration as well as to help plan the sharing of information to students on the importance of good sleep hygiene. Some of these students will be keeping a sleep diary at different times during the school year. This information will help our focus group have more in depth discussions regarding student sleep habits.
