PASTOR'S PERSPECTIVE ON CURRENT EVENTS; AND, WHAT ONE CAN DO TO COPE...

I am writing this while the violence of Charlottesville, Virginia is still fresh on my mind. Many of you cried in worship, on a recent Sunday, for our country. Many of you cried on Sunday thinking of what a world we have created for our children and grandchildren. I grieve with you. I do not think that what we are experiencing at this moment in our history will be short lived. Mistakes have been made on both sides of the political spectrum for far too long for a quick fix. So, it is from a Pastor’s heart I write today. I want to build you up for the long haul. I want to strengthen you with something that may relieve your anxiety. Paul says in, 1 Thessalonians 5:16-18: “Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.” So, trusting in God’s Word, I offer you prayers and encouragements. And I invite you to print this out and carry this with you and bring these words to mind whenever you feel your courage, and peace, slipping away. I know I
will be praying these prayers daily. Pastor Kurt

Some words from Jesus:
“Let not your hearts be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in me.”
John 14 v 1

Some words of St Paul about praying for national leadership: “I urge, then, first of all, that petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving be made for all people— for kings and all those in authority, that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and holiness.”
I Timothy 2 vv 1-2

Prayer based on Paul’s words:
God bless our land; God guide our rulers; God resolve our differences; God revive our churches; God forgive
our selfishness; God protect our homes; God strengthen our faith, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
Maurice Wood

Prayers for a time of national anxiety:
God of us all, who through the self-sacrifice of your Son reconciled the world to yourself, and charged us
with the ministry of your peace: by the healing influence of your Spirit inspire and direct those who are
called to bring reconciliation to areas of strife and discord; that through their ministry we may learn
to give and forgive, to listen and to love, after the example of your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.

“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But
take heart! I have overcome the world.”
Jesus; John 16 v 33

Comfort, O merciful Father, by thy Word and Holy Spirit all who are afflicted or distressed, and so turn
their hearts unto thee, that they may serve thee in truth and bring forth fruit to thy glory. Be thou, O Lord,
their succor and defense, through Jesus Christ our Lord, Amen.
Philip Melanchton, 1497-1560
