Encouraging an Interdisciplinary Orientation

Daniel Stokols, "Training the next Generation of Transdisciplinarians," in Michael O’Rourke et al, Enhancing Communication and Collaboration in Interdisciplinary Research, Sage, July, 2013:

Discusses how to encourage "transdisciplinary attitudes," and provides examples from undergraduate and especially graduate courses he has taught. He urges us to appreciate that different students have different interests and proclivities, and thus collaboration is not for all. But for students that will pursue collaborative research, the right attitudes are critical. He also stresses the importance of preparing students for "multilevel theorizing."
