Assessing the value of team science: A study comparing center- and investigator-Initiated grants.American Journal of Preventive Medicine, 42(2), 157-163 studied citations for research projects emanating from interdisciplinary research centers versus those from individual researchers (using a granting agency database). Though the interdisciplinary research projects lagged in gaining their first citations they outperformed in the longer run.

Mapping the Impact of Transdisciplinary Research: A Visual Comparison of Investigator Initiated and Team Based Tobacco Use Research Publications. The Journal of Translational Medicine and Epidemiology 2(2): 1033, p1-7 performed a similar comparative analysis but this time mapped publications onto a 'map' of scientific fields. They found that research teams published their results in more varied venues.
