Lab Locations
  • The Undergraduate Organic Chemistry Laboratories are located on the first floor (East and West wings) of the Chemistry Building.

Course Coordinators
  • Questions or concerns regarding the laboratory components of the course should be directed to Dr. Hayley Wan (orglabdr@ualberta.ca)
  • Questions or concerns regarding the lecture components of the course should be directed to Dr. Frederick West (frederick.west@ualberta.ca)

General Information
  • Students must obtain a mark of 60% in the laboratory component to pass the organic chemistry course.
  • The overall value of the laboratory component is 25%.
  • Students are expected to attend ALL laboratory periods. Attendance will be taken every laboratory class.
  • Laboratory classes begin promptly at 8:00 am AND 2:00 pm. If you are late, you may be denied entry into the lab class and demerit marks may be deducted from your lab score.
  • If you arrive late and miss any quizzes, they CANNOT be re-scheduled and a score of zero will be recorded.
  • Absences from the laboratory class must be substantiated by presenting suitable documentation to Dr. H. Wan or Mr. C. Part within one week of the missed lab. Excused absences for up to TWO laboratory classes will be allowed. The weighting of these missed experiments will be transferred to the final lab exam.

Lab Reports
  • Lab reports are due to your TA's report box (in the Chemistry East Hallway) two days after the lab class in which the experiment was performed. Please refer to the schedule in your lab manual for specific deadlines.*
  • Lab reports handed in after the 2-day deadline will have 5 marks deducted per day (up to 3 days).
  • Lab reports will not be accepted later than 3 days after the deadline. In case of extenuating circumstances (such as documented illness, please see Dr. H. Wan with your supporting documentation.
* This does NOT apply to Spring session students (as your reports are due every morning at 10:00 am). During Spring session, late lab reports will have deductions of 5 marks per hour (up to 3 hours). Lab reports will not be accepted later than 3 hours after the deadline.

Check-In and Check-Out
  • During Check-In, ensure ALL equipment is accounted for and in good condition. You are responsible for all the glassware and equipment for the entire semester.
  • If items are missing, cracked or broken, notify your TA.
  • Once you are satisfied that you have a complete set of equipment, you must sign the 'Glassware Sheet' before starting your experiment.
  • At Check-Out, ensure ALL equipment is cleaned and returned to the drawers. Then complete your cleaning duties (as assigned your TA).
