Getting Started with Google Apps

Welcome to Google Apps

Now that you have a new Google Apps account, you're ready to take advantage of all the benefits of Google Apps Mail, Calendar, Docs, Sites and Chat. We think you'll find that these services will make communicating and collaborating with your coworkers, professors and classmates easier and more efficient.

The OIT and OIT Help Desk are committed to helping you use Google Apps. We're available to help if you encounter any issues, have difficulty with the services, or just need answers to your questions.

How to Use This Guide

To get started with your new email and calendar services, follow the instructions in this guide to complete the following tasks:

Step 1: Access your new email and calendar services.
Step 2: Change your Google Apps password.
Step 3: Import existing calendars and contacts.

Access your Google Apps Account

To access your Google Apps account, go to the start page at and click on the Sign In link:

This will take you to the "Welcome" page on which you will enter your existing Charger ID and password, and then click Sign In. A temporary password has been assigned in order for your to access your new email account. If you do not know the default password, please contact the OIT Help Desk at 256-824-3333.

Change your Google Apps Account Password

Change your password from our User Services portal: by entering your Charger ID and password at the top of the page.

Select the Google Apps menu item.

Set up a new password by clicking on the Account Activation/Password Reset button.

Accessing the Applications

Across the top of the Start Page are quick links to the applications: Inbox (Mail), Calendar, Docs, Sites, Talk, and Groups. We have also included a link to the Google Apps Learning Center that contains links to FAQs and documentation on how to use the applications: 

When in an application, in the top left corner will be navigation links to the other applications that can be used for navigation:

Finally, several “quick links” have been created for you to make it easy to remember the Web address from anywhere:

Import Existing Information into Google Apps

Importing Calendars

Instructions for importing events from other applications (such as Outlook) in an iCalendar or CSV format can be found on the Google Help site.

Importing Your Personal Contacts

Instructions on how to import your address books (from Outlook, Hotmail, Yahoo!, orkut, and other services) can be found on the Google Help site.
