Biographical Sketch of Dorla A. Evans, Ph.D.
Dr. Evans has a B.S. in Speech from the University of Texas, an MBA from the University of Houston at Clear Lake City, and a Ph.D. in Finance from the University of Arkansas. She has taught for 25 years, 20 years at UAH. She has been nominated for the College’s Outstanding Teaching Award several times and won in 1997-1998. In 1995 she was Honorable Mention in the Southern Business Administration Association’s Teaching Innovation Award and received the Southwestern Business Deans' Association’s Innovation Achievement Award for Curriculum Innovation in 1994-1995. Dr. Evans initiated the Alabama Credit Union Outstanding Finance Award (which is a cash prize given annually to the all-around best finance student) and the McGraw-Hill Finance Service Award (which goes annually to the finance student who provides the best service to the finance discipline, the College, and UAH). She initiated and directed the TVA Investment Challenge for 4 years and initiated the Financial Management Association (student finance club) in 2003. She is the advisor of the UAH Entrepreneurship Club. She cares deeply about her students and keeps track of her majors on her personal web site.
Dr. Evans’ research interests include the application of the principles of behavioral finance and experimental methods to investment and corporate finance decisions. She received a grant from the National Science Foundation in 1993 to study risky decision making. She has published extensively in such prestigious journals as the Journal of Political Economy, the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, and the Journal of Management. She won the outstanding research award here at UAH and at the University of Texas at El Paso. In 2011 she received the UAH Distinguished Teaching Award. Dr. Evans also won the Alumni Association’s Distinguished Faculty Award in 1999 and the C. David Billings Faculty Fellowship in 1999-2000.
She has been quoted numerous times in The Huntsville Times and other Alabama newspapers and has appeared on all of the local television news channels.
Dr. Evans (nee Coleman) was born in Laredo, Texas but traveled as part of a military family. She married Steve Evans in 1973. They have no children but dote on three cats. They enjoy gardening.
