THE CROSSDECK

This class is for sewing skills intermediate and above participants.

The Crossdeck is now a classic kite that dates back to 1993 when the original plan appeared in Kitelines Magazine Vol. 10 No. 2   authored by Carl Crowell.

This was one of my first kite builds, I was intrigued by its unusual shape and size being a little over 6 feet tall and 7 feet wide. The magazine’s plans were very detailed and easy to follow.

The kite has a wind range of 7 to 15 MPH.  Easy to launch, easy to fly. With good wind it can be staked.

This Crossdeck project will somewhat follow the original plan, but changes have been made to simplify the construction and various parts used. Changes that allow the kite to be completed in a weekend workshop.

The Crossdeck picture shown, white sail, red graphic and blue wing tips are provided precut in the project kit.

Edge binding will be black cut to width (.75”) and you will single fold for assembly. Loops on wing tips will be black grosgrain .25” cut to length.

The framing spars will be wrapped carbon for the spine and spreader. Pultruded carbon wing spars will be cut to length and end caps attached. Spine will be cut to length and includes ferrules. The spreader spar(s) will be cut to the proper length when the kite is finished.

STUFF NEEDED FOR CLASS A sewing machine that works!!!  Sometimes things happen and a machine acts up, that’s understandable, but if your machine is always funky don’t bring it.

Nothing special is needed in the way of tools.   Thread, extra needles, double stick tape or spray if you prefer, ruler.  IF you’re an intermediate sewer you know what you need to make a kite, some will even bring the kitchen sink, that is good!

The presenter will provide templates, a hot cutting surface and a hot sail cutter.
