Wooden Shoes Book Boosters

Welcome to the Wooden Shoes Book Boosters Web Page!
The Unit 50 library staff invites you to browse the attached book selection of over 250 book titles for the purpose of making contributions to any of the three schools' library collections. Donated books will have bookplates affixed to the inside front cover indicating the donor and honoree. For instance, a parent may wish to purchase a book to commemorate his or her son's graduation, birthday, or First Communion. Or, a daughter may select a book for her parents' 50th wedding anniversary. The possibilities of honorees are many and varied.

Why the Need for the Wooden Shoes Book Boosters Program?
The program is created with two objectives in mind. One is to re-vitalize and build our library collections. Particularly needful is the aging grade school collection, in which the average copyright date is 1994. As Common Core Standards become more widely used, this will be a cause for concern. The objectives of the Common Core Standards cannot be fully realized without the necessary resources. Also of concern is the dilapidated condition of many of the high school's popular titles. By the end of the 2012-2013 school year, THS students had taken 2,668 AR quizzes with a passing grade of 60% or better. If our district is to maintain this prolific reading practice, appropriate resources must be provided.

The second objective is to initiate a sense of "ownership" and pride in our school libraries. As library collections build through the Book Boosters Program, our students and other patrons will notice that community members have personally invested in library resources. Our library collections become not simply shelves of books, but rather collections in which titles were individually selected and contributed by grandparents, aunts, uncles, and other community members. When students see bookplates indicating donors and honorees, our collections take on a personal quality.

Why Does the Wooden Shoes Book Boosters Program Order Through the Permabound Book Company?
Located in Jacksonville, IL, Permabound is a family-owned and operated downstate Illinois company. Started in 1954 in part by the Hertzberg families, the company unconditionally guarantees their book binding. Because of this guarantee, titles purchased through the Book Boosters Program are expected to have an extended shelf life. Permabound also offers free shipping and free cataloging records. Additionally, Permabound has been very gracious in accommodating the needs of the Wooden Shoes Book Boosters Program.

If you prefer to donate bindings other than Permabound, please notify the librarian.
