                            WELCOME TO LANGUAGE ARTS!

We stand for making everyone physically, mentally, and emotionally safe.
If your child has been a  target of anything mean, let us know.

My goal for  language arts is to create an environment which fosters critical and creative thinking, develops students' written and oral communication skills, and builds responsibility while maintaining a safe, collaborative, and enjoyable environment.

Homework

  • Monday, 11/12-
Happy Veteran's Day! Thank you to anyone that served (currently serving) to protect our country!

Homework- Finish Narrative Flash Draft. Students had a full class period to type a flash draft of their narrative essay. They were asked to use one of the seeds they brainstormed last week and write a draft. We will edit/revise this draft throughout the week.

Narrative Essay- Final, printed copy due Friday, 11/16.
    Extra Help- Thursday
PTA Reflections Contest- Due by 12/7 to LA teacher. Visit Hillcrest's main page for entry form or see me for a copy. This year's theme is Heroes Around Me!

  • Friday, 11/9-
Be sure to finish seed ideas in your writer's notebook. Students wrote about 2 events in their life on Thursday. Today, they wrote about another one in class.  We used quotes (see Google Classroom for Narrative slideshow) from our Short Story unit to generate big ideas to write about. Each seed idea should be one page in length. Students should be sure to have finished 3 seed journals in their writer's notebook. If students did not finish this in class and at home over the last two days, they may need to spend an additional 10 minutes this weekend working on it.

Homework- Read the model "The Jacket" (extra copy on Google Classroom). Write 10 observations/things you notice about the model. What are qualities of good writing that you notice (verb choice/engaging lead, literary devices, etc.)?  This should take 10 minutes to complete.

On Monday we will flash draft their narrative essay in class. Students should select one of their seeds to use and/or have their topic in mind so they can use class time to flash draft.

Students should have finished the writer's notebook and career reflection in class, just leaving their poem worksheet for homework (10 minutes).

Continue to bring writer's notebook, a new double-pocket folder, and your chrome-book to class all week.
