Summer Camp Reminders

Following are some important details and last minute reminders.  Please read closely and contact anyone on the summer camp committee if you have questions:

Important Packing Note

Pack a small bag/backpack with a change of clothes for Sunday (including your gray Troop 353 t-shirt), toiletries, and your swim trunks, towel, sunscreen, etc. for Sunday’s swim test.  This bag will go with you in your vehicle – and will avoid having to dig in your big bag in the trailer for one day’s stuff.  Other gear and bags will go in the trailer. (More info on packing below.)

Transportation / Food
  • Depart – Saturday, July 23
    • Meet at Francis Howell Middle School at 7 a.m.  Leave no later than 7:30 a.m.  DO NOT BE LATE.  Everyone should wear “Class B” uniforms.  Pack your gray Troop 353 t-shirt to wear on Sunday.
    • If anyone would like to send a batch of brownies, cookies, etc. for break stops on the way down (hint – hint), the travelers would be very grateful.  (35 people are in Saturday’s caravan.)
    • Lunch – Picnic stop, outdoor sports/activities
    • Afternoon – Activity & snack break at Maple Hill Sports Center, Lebanon, TN.  Mini golf, aeroball, batting cage, etc.
    • Dinner / Overnight / Breakfast – Camp Latimer near Spencer, TN.
  • Sunday, July 24 Lunch – On the road
  • Return travel – Saturday, July 30 - Sunday, July 31
    • Depart Camp – travel to Clingmans Dome, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, TN.  Inclement weather alternate is the American Museum of Science & Energy, Oak Ridge, TN.
    • Lunch – Pizza/salad buffet near Sevierville, TN
    • Dinner – On the road
    • Overnight – Church near Clarksville, TN
  • Sunday, July 31
    • Breakfast – On the road
    • Lunch – On the road, unless making good time
    • Arrive – Sunday, June 31
    • Return to Francis Howell Middle School, approximately 2:00 – 3:00 p.m.  Scouts will call on the way back with a more accurate time.

The Leaders Guide contains a lot of good information, including a list of what to pack – don’t forget deodorant and Gold Bond J – and what NOT to pack. 

  • See note above regarding the small bag to pack for Saturday/Sunday.
  • The Troop will arrive at camp on Sunday wearing the gray Troop 353 t-shirts.  Pack this in your small bag.  Put your name inside your gray t-shirts using a permanent marker.  An adult will wash them during camp to wear home.
  • Class A uniforms are required at camp.  You should leave pins, hanging patches, sash, etc., at home, but otherwise bring your full uniform along with a neckerchief and slide.  Your shirt may be on a hanger.
  • No aerosol cans are allowed.  Deodorant, bug spray, deodorant, sunscreen, deodorant, etc. must be a product other aerosol.  (Did someone mention deodorant?)

Camp Gear

Gear (except for your small bag/backpack) can be dropped off at Mr. Scott’s house on Friday, July 22, between 7 and 9 p.m.  Please call to tell him you are coming – (314) 882-1183.  His address is 50 Turnbridge Court, Dardenne Prairie, 63368.

Reminders
  • Fees – All camp fees should be paid by this time.  Donna Englert has contacted you if you have an outstanding balance, which must be paid prior to camp.
  • Physicals – Lisa Christman has communicated any outstanding items.  No person will be permitted to attend camp with incomplete or missing information.
  • Medication – All medications must be in original containers, placed in a Ziploc bag with the Scout or Scouter’s name on the outside of the bag, and given to Lisa Christman prior to departure.  See Lisa’s July 6 e-mail regarding medication requirements.
  • Activity Consent Form – You’ve received an e-mail from either John Nauman or Donna Englert if this form is required.  Bring it with you on July 23.
  • Merit Badges / Costs – A list of the merit badges everyone has signed up for is attached.  Many of these have prerequisites that must be completed in advance.  Merit badge prerequisites and any additional costs are listed in the Leaders Guide, beginning on page 24.  Extra costs must be paid in person, in cash, at camp.  Scouts should bring enough money to cover those costs personally.
  • Swim Test – All Scouts must pass the BSA Swimmer Test to participate in water-related activities at summer camp.  This will occur on Sunday after check-in.  Pack your swim trunks, towel, etc. in your small bag.
  • Whitewater Rafting trip – Any person participating in the Whitewater Rafting trip must have the release form signed and should bring $35 cash to pay the Whitewater Rafting fee at camp.
  • Spending Money – Scouts should take enough cash for merit badge supplies, fees, white water, and any additional items they wish to purchase at the camp’s trading post (t-shirts, patches, etc.). 
  • Monday Night Patch Trading – Anyone wishing to participate in this activity should bring items with them to trade. (See Leaders Guide, page 17.)
 
Electronics
Because this is a long trip, Scouts will be allowed to bring electronics for use during travel only – headphones are encouraged.  Each scout may bring, at his own risk, whatever electronics can fit in a one gallon Ziploc bag, with his name on the outside.  The bag will be turned into the troop leadership upon arrival at camp and will be locked up in a vehicle until departure for home.  If there is a concern about items being lost or damaged, please leave them at home.  Drivers have the final say over the use of any device in his or her vehicle.
